Civil War Ball

Why host a ball during the Civil War, in the midst of such hardships?
There were balls in America and balls in Victorian England. The difference between the two is quite simple. While both balls were social events, balls in America were often held to support the soldiers. On some occasions there were very few gentlemen because most were off at war. The ladies would host a ball to raise money and other items for the soldiers. So, while they were having a great time, they knew it was a profitable time.

Just finished: Civil War Storage Box-"Soldier's Ball".Available at the The Heritage Museum telephone number is: 540-879-2616. The address is: 382 High Street, Dayton, Va. 22821.

Easter Egg

This is just finished. I bought(at Michaels Crafts) this foot long -22 inches around Easter egg-the material is a rubberish plastic-(very sturdy but light weight) I painted a village all around the sides and Historic Silver Lake Mill (here in Dayton). On the top-I painted an Easter Bunny (inspired by a PA German Fraktur drawing said to be the first Easter Bunny in the New World). He is carrying a basket of brightly colored eggs.I took pictures before the varnishing -that will give it a hard GLOSSY finish. See it and more on my Etsy Site.
And check out Silver Lake Mill at www.silverlakemill.com/

Peter Bernhart Book -JUST IN!!!

The well-received exhibit at The Heritage Museum entitled "Bernhart & Company: Shenandoah Valley Folk Art Fraktur (1774-1850)" brought together over seventy treasured decorative certificates celebrating births and baptisms, marriages and house blessings, and other significant family events in the lives of the early German and Swiss settlers. The primary focus of the exhibit is the work of the prolific Rockingham County fraktur artist, Peter Bernhart, but also features other fraktur artists working in the region. With pen, paper, and ink, these individual and unassociated folk artists produced fraktur beginning in the mid-eighteenth century and continuing almost seventy-five years, until the death of the German language in the Western Shenandoah Valley. The tradition of verifying life events with colorful, and often whimsical, paper certificates created an unseen Shenandoah Valley heritage which is explored in the exhibit.

This exhibit catalogue is of special interest to genealogists, art historians, collectors, and those with an interest in local history. Genealogists will research local family connections aided by the translation provided for each fraktur. Art historians will delight at the unique motifs, colors, and artistic style of Virginia Backcountry folk art. Collectors will appreciate the depth and variety of the local specimens, some of which have been made public for the first time. Historians will discover the unexplored story of the cultural history of the early German-speaking settlers who were drawn to the fertile Shenandoah Valley, the Colonial frontier of Virginia. And everyone will have an enduring record of thjis unique fraktur collection.

FOR YOUR VALENTINE.....

These prints from original paintings I did of a Scherenschnitte which means "scissor cuts" in German, is the art of papercutting design. The art work often has symmetry within the design, and common forms include silhouettes, valentines, and love letters. The art tradition was founded in Switzerland and Germany in the 16th century, and was brought to Colonial America in the 18th century by immigrants who settled primarily in Pennsylvania.
I have framed this in a wood frame with a satin ribbon for hanging. This would make such a romantic little gift for a loved one this Valentines.
The print is 4 inches by 4 inches and the frame measures 6 1/2 inches square.
Check them out on my ETSY site....

Illuminated Manuscripts Inspiration for Fraktur Art

Pennsylvania German fraktur were handwritten documents that recorded births and baptisms in the last half of the 18th century. The birth and baptismal certificates - referred to as Geburts und Taufscheins -- employ fraktur lettering. Fraktur were produced from about 1760 to the early years of the twentieth century, almost always in German. By around 1900, fraktur are frequently found written in English.

Schoolmasters, itinerant artists, and scholars filled in fraktur certificates. These people were highly skilled in producing decorative handwriting. When a writer was finished with his work, he would decorate it with naïve drawings and watercolors of animals, angels, mermaids, flowers, birds, and hearts. The work of the fraktur scribes and artists ranges from downright primitive to quite marvelous.

Fraktur art blends text and decoration, it is close in nature to the medieval illuminated manuscript. While American fraktur may have its roots in European illuminated manuscripts, it is significantly different in one major aspect. American fraktur is used strictly to record family events.

This painting was inspired by two of my favorite illuminated manuscripts depicting the angels announcing the birth of Jesus to the Shepherds in the field.

THE PA GERMAN DOWER CHEST

The Dower Chest, better known as a Hope Chest or Blanket Chest in present time, is referred to by the Pennsylvania Dutch as Ausschteier Kischt. This piece of furniture is the most cherished and most representative of the Germanic
Immigrants who came to live in Pennsylvania during the late 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries.Young girls between the ages of eight to ten were given Hope Chests inscribed with their names and usually the date of presentation. This storage chest was filled with household items that the girl made, was given or purchased in anticipation of her future marriage. On her wedding day, this completely filled Hope Chest was proudly placed in the "Wedding Wagon" to be taken to her new home. Items would have included blankets, bed linens, baby clothes, quilts and some family heirlooms. These beautiful hardwood chests were then placed at the end of the bridal couples bed. In some homes, it was situated in a central area, such as the parlor, with the family Bible resting on the top.
This is a small Amish made wooden dower chest that I bought in
Lancaster last year.It measures approximately 18" inches wide and 12" high.
I painted it with traditional Pennsylvania German motifs.
